Atrahasis and the Great Flood

The lesser gods tired of labor; humans were made to dig canals and feed the temples. But humanity multiplied until their clamor kept Enlil from sleep. Plague, drought, and famine followed — each time Ea whispered a way for Atrahasis to spare his people.

Enlil resolved on a flood. Ea spoke through a reed wall, telling Atrahasis to demolish his house and build a vessel, to load animals and craftspeople, to seal pitch against the coming waters.

Storm gods shattered the dikes. For seven days and nights the flood erased cities. When waters fell, Atrahasis offered sacrifice; the hungry gods gathered “like flies” over the sweet scent. Enlil raged that anyone survived — then accepted a new design: not annihilation, but limits on human lifespan and birth.

Atrahasis stands with Utnapishtim as Mesopotamia’s answer to why floods come — and why the gods themselves cannot bear a silent world.
