Cult sites: Enoshima Shrine, an island cult of sea and luck, Chikubu-shima in Lake Biwa, Benten-do halls in temple precincts, including Ueno.

Festivals: Benten festivals (snake day), Enoshima Benzaiten rites.

People bring the biwa, coins, and a wish for speech that works. Island shrines mix her with naga and water kami. As one of the Seven Lucky Gods she is visited for eloquence and trade as much as for music. The snake is kept as a living sign, not a mascot.

Saraswati

Cult sites: Saraswati temples at Basar and Koothanur, School and music-room shrines.

Festivals: Vasant Panchami, Navaratri in the Saraswati form.

Books and instruments are set before her and not touched that morning. White cloth, a veena, no heavy food. Students ask her before exams; the cult is study, not sacrifice.

Benzaiten (Benten) is the goddess of things that flow: water, music, speech, and the luck that rides on eloquence. She is one of the **Seven Lucky Gods**. Her far origin is the Hindu river goddess **Saraswati**, carried into Japan through Buddhist transmission and then mixed with native water kami, especially at island shrines such as Enoshima.

Saraswati

Hindu Pantheon

Goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. Consort of Brahma. She invented Sanskrit and the Devanagari script. Patron of students, artists, and scholars.

Saraswati emerged from Brahma's mouth or was created by him. She represents the feminine creative power (shakti) of Brahma. Originally also a river goddess, she embodies the flow of knowledge and consciousness.

Saraswati is the goddess of **knowledge**, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. As the consort of **Brahma** the creator, she represents the creative power (*shakti*) that gives form to his thoughts. She is the mother of the Vedas and inventor of the Sanskrit language and Devanagari script.
