Leshy

A 19th-century folk figure, not a pagan-era god

The leshy ("forest one") belongs to the lower mythology recorded from East Slavic peasants by 19th-century ethnographers, chiefly Alexander Afanasyev's collections of folktales and his study Poeticheskie vozzreniya slavyan na prirodu ("The Poetic Outlook of the Slavs upon Nature," 1865–1869). No medieval chronicle or missionary account names him; he survives only in this much later oral record, alongside domovoi, vodyanoy, and rusalka, as part of a household-and-wilderness spirit system that coexisted with official Orthodox Christianity (dvoeverie, "double-faith").

Character

Peasant tellers described the leshy as the forest's owner and caretaker: he can appear human-sized or taller than the trees, walk without casting a shadow, and wear his coat buttoned right-over-left (opposite the human custom) as a telltale sign. He punishes those who abuse the forest or curse carelessly (a careless "go to the leshy" was thought risky to say aloud) and can reward respectful hunters and shepherds with good fortune, but is best known for leading lost travelers in senseless circles until they lose their bearings entirely, a fate reversible, in the folklore, by turning one's clothes inside out.
