Nuada Airgetlám is the archetypal king of Irish mythology, embodying both the glory and the limitations of sovereignty. His story illustrates the Celtic belief that a king's physical wholeness reflects the health of the land itself—a concept central to Irish sacral kingship.
When the Tuatha Dé Danann arrived in Ireland, they faced the Fir Bolg, the previous inhabitants. In the great battle that followed, Nuada fought the Fir Bolg champion Sreng. Though the Tuatha Dé Danann won the war, Sreng severed Nuada's right arm at the shoulder. This wound would cost Nuada his crown.
Irish tradition held that a king must be without physical flaw. A blemished king brought blight upon the land, causing crops to fail and cattle to sicken. Nuada, despite his valor and wisdom, could not rule with only one arm. The Tuatha Dé Danann chose Bres the Beautiful, whose Fomorian parentage would soon reveal itself in his cruel and miserly reign.
The god of healing, Dian Cécht, crafted for Nuada an arm of silver that could move and grip as well as one of flesh. This miraculous prosthetic restored Nuada's eligibility for kingship, though seven years of Bres's tyranny had to be endured first. Later, Dian Cécht's son Miach grew Nuada an arm of true flesh, a feat that so enraged his father that he killed his own son.
Nuada wielded Claiomh Solais (the Sword of Light), one of the Four Treasures brought to Ireland from the northern islands. This blade was irresistible in battle—once drawn, no enemy could escape it.
In the Second Battle of Mag Tuired, Nuada faced Balor of the Evil Eye, the Fomorian king whose single eye killed all it gazed upon. Balor slew Nuada with that terrible glance, but Lugh avenged him by putting out Balor's eye with a sling-stone.
Nuada led the **Tuatha Dé Danann** when they invaded Ireland and fought the First Battle of Mag Tuired against the **Fir Bolg**. Though his people won, Nuada lost his right arm to the Fir Bolg champion Sreng. Because a king must be physically perfect, Nuada was forced to abdicate in favor of **Bres**, a half-Fomorian whose reign proved tyrannical. The physician god **Dian Cécht** fashioned Nuada a working arm of silver, earning him the epithet Airgetlám ("Silver Hand"). Later, Dian Cécht's son Miach replaced the silver with one of flesh, and Nuada reclaimed his throne—only to fall in the Second Battle of Mag Tuired against **Balor of the Evil Eye**.
