The fruit that ends return
In Odyssey 9 Odysseus next reaches the lotus-eaters. Three scouts eat the honey-sweet fruit and lose the will to report home; he drags them back weeping and ties them under the benches. The island is unnamed. Later geographers guessed Libya. There is no lotus cult. The stop is a brief anthropological trap: hospitality that erases nostos. Homer spends few lines because the danger is appetite, not a monster.
