High plain of heaven
Takamagahara is the heavenly field where Amaterasu rules, where the kami hold council, and from which Ninigi descends to the islands. The Kojiki and Nihon Shoki place the rock-cave of the sun, the weaving hall, and the eight million kami's noise there. It is a political sky, not a mapped plateau. No shrine claims to be the plain itself; shrines receive kami from it. The descent (tenson korin) is the charter of the imperial line.
