Apollodorus 2.5.9: the ninth labor is Hippolyta's girdle, a gift of Ares, at Themiscyra on the Thermodon. The Amazons receive him until Hera starts a rumor; fighting follows; the belt is taken. Herodotus later historicizes Amazons; the labor does not. Themiscyra is a Black Sea address for a female warrior politeia. The girdle is a token, not a city's constitution.
