Ogun is one of the most powerful Orishas, ruling over iron, war, and all forms of labor and technology. He is the divine blacksmith who forged the tools that built civilization.
When the Orishas needed to descend from heaven to earth, they found the way blocked by impenetrable forest. Only Ogun, with his iron machete, could clear the path. For this service, he earned the title 'The Pathmaker.'
In Yoruba culture, the most binding oaths are sworn on Ogun's iron. Breaking such an oath invites Ogun's terrible wrath. This tradition persists today in Nigerian courts.
As the lord of iron and technology, Ogun has grown in importance in the modern age. He is the patron of drivers, mechanics, surgeons, soldiers, and all who work with metal or machinery.
Ogun emerged from Olodumare as the embodiment of iron's transformative power. He was among the first Orishas to descend to earth, using his iron machete to clear the path through the primordial forest.

“Ogun, the one who has water at home but bathes in blood. Owner of the road, opener of paths.”
