The Water Woman of the Atlantic World
Mami Wata is a water-power of West and Central Africa and the diaspora, often a beautiful woman with a snake or fish lower body. The name is pidgin ('Mammy Water'); the cult is documented in the colonial and modern ethnographic record more thickly than in a single precolonial scripture.
She gives wealth and takes fidelity. Treat her as a living cult being, not a fossilized monster.
