Xi Wangmu (Queen Mother of the West) is one of the oldest and most important goddesses in Chinese religion, predating even Taoism. She rules over the western paradise on Mount Kunlun and controls access to immortality through her sacred peaches.
Xi Wangmu appears in the earliest Chinese texts, including oracle bone inscriptions from the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE). In the ancient Classic of Mountains and Seas, she is described as a wild figure with a leopard's tail, tiger's teeth, and a magnificent disheveled appearance. Over centuries, she was transformed into an elegant, regal goddess.
Xi Wangmu resides in a magnificent palace on Mount Kunlun, the mythical axis mundi of Chinese cosmology. Her paradise is filled with jade palaces, magic gardens, and the Pool of Jewels. Here she is attended by jade maidens and the three-legged crow messenger. The gardens contain the legendary Peaches of Immortality.
Xi Wangmu's most famous possession is the orchard of immortal peach trees. These trees flower once every 3,000 years, and their fruits take another 3,000 years to ripen. Eating one grants immortality. When the peaches ripen, Xi Wangmu hosts a great banquet for all the immortals, the Peach Banquet (Pantao Hui).
In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong was appointed guardian of the peach orchard. Instead of guarding, he ate many of the peaches, gaining immense power. He then crashed the Peach Banquet and consumed all the food and drink. This crime was one of the main reasons for his imprisonment under Five Elements Mountain.
Xi Wangmu rules over all female immortals and teaches the secret arts to worthy women seeking transcendence. She represents the yin (female) principle at its most powerful, balancing the yang (male) Jade Emperor.
Xi Wangmu is a primordial goddess who has existed since the beginning of time. She established her paradise on Mount Kunlun in the far west and planted the orchards of immortal peaches that grant eternal life to the gods.
“The Queen Mother of the West dwells on Jade Mountain. Her appearance is like that of a human, but she has a leopard's tail and a tiger's teeth. She is good at whistling and wears a crown of victory in her hair.”
