Hunahpu and Xbalanque are the central heroes of the Popol Vuh. Their adventures feature monster-slaying, underworld journeys, death and resurrection, and the establishment of cosmic order.
The twins were conceived when Hun Hunahpu's skull impregnated the maiden Xquic.
Their first great deed was defeating Vucub Caquix (Seven Macaw), a boastful bird who falsely claimed to be the sun and moon.
The twins were summoned to Xibalba but succeeded through cleverness where their father failed. They survived the Houses of Darkness, Knives, Cold, Jaguars, Fire, and Bats.
The twins voluntarily died, were ground to powder and thrown in the river, then resurrected as fish and then as performers. They defeated the death lords by killing them but not reviving them.
After defeating death, the twins resurrected their father and ascended to become the Sun and Moon.
The Hero Twins were miraculously conceived from their father's skull. Born in the upper world, they became great heroes who defeated false gods, outwitted the lords of death, and became the sun and moon.

“And this is the great defeat of the rulers of Xibalba: only through a miracle did the boys accomplish it.”
