Lei Gong

The Thundering Punisher

Lei Gong is the terrifying god of thunder, charged with punishing evil and executing divine justice. His thunder announces the wrath of Heaven against those whose crimes have escaped human judgment.

Fearsome Appearance

Lei Gong is depicted as a frightening hybrid creature: he has blue or black skin, the beak of a rooster, eagle claws, and bat wings. He carries drums strapped to his body, and with his mallets creates the thunder that shakes the heavens. His appearance is meant to terrify evildoers into righteousness.

The Ministry of Thunder

Lei Gong works within the celestial bureaucracy as head of the Ministry of Thunder. He receives orders from the Jade Emperor specifying who should be punished. He is assisted by Dian Mu (Mother of Lightning), who uses her mirrors to illuminate hidden sinners so Lei Gong can strike them accurately. Yun Zhongjun (Cloud Master) and Yu Shi (Rain Master) also work alongside him.

Divine Justice

Lei Gong's primary function is to punish crimes that escape human justice - secret murders, unfilial children, and those who cheat the gods. Those struck by lightning are presumed guilty of some hidden crime. However, Lei Gong is not infallible; stories tell of him accidentally striking innocent people and having to make amends.

Popular Tales

In one famous story, Lei Gong was captured by a mortal who tied him up. The man's son fed Lei Gong water, allowing the thunder god to escape. In gratitude, Lei Gong gave the boy a seed that grew into a giant gourd. When the great flood came, the boy and his sister survived in the gourd, becoming the ancestors of humanity.
