Hermes is the swift messenger of the gods, wearing winged sandals and carrying the caduceus. He is the patron of boundaries and travelers, and the only god (besides Hades and Persephone) who can freely travel to the Underworld.
On the very day he was born, Hermes stole Apollo's sacred cattle. To reconcile, he invented the lyre from a tortoise shell and gifted it to Apollo. This established his role as a trickster and patron of thieves and merchants.
